The North Capital of Russia
Founded
in 1703, St. Petersburg was the capital of Russia from 1712 till 1918.
During almost 300 years of its history, St. Petersburg accumulated
all the grandeur of the Russian Imperial Court and became one of the
largest centers of culture, science and industry. Created by Peter the
Great as a sea port on the Baltic, it was essentially "a window to
the West" for Russia, combining the best of
the East and the West.
One could
give many different answers to the question "Why is
St.Petersburg so attractive at any season of the year?". Admiring the glorious
architecture of the most European of all Russian cities would be
one reason, with examples such as Palace Square, with the Winter Palace and

Summer, it's a real pleasure to visit Peterhof-

poetically described by the great Russian writers, Pushkin and Dostoevsky,
add to the city's charm. Visitors can enjoy boat trips along the
canals of the "Venice of the North." You may also travel by
ship from St.Petersburg to Ladozjskoe Lake and Onezgskoe Lake to explore
the nature and scenery of the Russian North.
During
the White Nights, (from the end of May until the middle of July), the city experiences
a very intensive musical life. Lovers of classical, jazz, pop and
rock music, may easily find events in accordance with their tastes.
The bright colors of "Golden Autumn" and a more
gentle sun add a special flavor to the Fall season in
the city. This is an ideal time to visit the fabulously rich palaces and
parks of former Russian royalty. The impressive endless suite of
Golden Rooms, in Catherine Palace of the Baroque style described by
Pushkin, and the exquisite elegance of the classical interiors of
Pavlovski Palace are famous all over the world.
Winter in
St. Petersburg has its own unique magic. In December, January, and
February, the famous "Russian Winter" features white sparkling
snows and the legendary Russian Troyka in the countryside. The Russian holiday
season combines two Christmases and two New Years (New and Old style). So
there is plenty of opportunity to eat, drink, and be merry!! And
ballet, opera, and concerts, with internationally famous performers, are
essential parts of the cultural life of St. Petersburg in
Winter.
