Yalta is the most famous Ukrainian Black Sea coastal resort city, located on the scenic Crimean peninsula. It is located 79 km south of Simferopol and has a population of over 150,000. Yalta has a long and interesting history. It was first mentioned by an Arabic geographer, Idrizi, in the 12th Century, as Dzhalita, the city of Polotsians. On Italian maps of the 14th century, it is called Healita or Etalita. In the 15th century, the city was leveled by an earthquake. And only in the past 70 years, since the Greeks and Armenians settled the district, has it been known as Yalta. Mark Twain spent time in Yalta during his youth. The renowned Ukrainian poetess, Lesya Ukrainka, along with many other notables and ordinary citizens, have been coming here for years to experience Yalta's renowned, invigorating and curative characteristics and fresh sea air. Yalta is surrounded by so many beautiful and interesting sights, both man-made and natural, that you can visit and explore new places every day and never run out of things to do.
